I long despaired of finding realistic biographies of some saints, particularly Francis of Assisi and his ‘eldest son’, Antony, the saint among saints who, although known as Antony of Padua was born in Lisbon and spent the greater part of his short life in Portugal. The lives of both these men were invariably so top heavy with signs, portents, wonders and miracles that by comparison fairy stories seemed sober narratives. It wasn’t until I found Michael de la Bedoyere’s Francis: A Biography of the Saint of Assisi (1962) and Henry James Coleridge’s Chronicles of St. Antony of Padua (1875) that the two 12th/13th century friars became men as well as saints for me.

Michael de la Bedoyere’s book is still available but Fr. Coleridge’s is a rarity so I am happy to be able to offer it here – Fernando Bulöes’s (St. Antony’s original name) story told with muscular objectivity, and the miracles heaven chose to work through him in a perspective that serves to foster credibility rather than exhaust it.
The Popular Fatima Prayer Book is now available in Portuguese and Spanish as well as English - each with supplementary material suitable for pilgrims from countries speaking these languages.
