Pictorial Biography

I’m in a quandary about what to do with this site section called About. I wanted to change the name to rummage-room but was told that every site has an About and that to interfere with a tradition that must has its origins in the dim mists of the 1980s is digital treachery.

My problem is - what is About supposed to be about?

About yourself, experts tell me; about what you are about.

This is a subject of infinite interest, I acknowledge, but only to me. Yet here again those who are in tune with the protocol of cyberspace proclaim a ‘must’ so here goes.

I was born in the sleepy city of Nelson at the top of New Zealand’s South Island, now Te Waipounamu, on the month that WWII was declared....no! thats tripe!

Wait a minute. I’ve got an idea. I was sifting through a trunk of old photographs recently and was intrigued by certain disparities between the guileless, not unhandsome youth who had my name, the ribald seaman, the amused teacher, the apprentice writer – putting on weight and going bald – and the gnarled old curmudgeon who’s writing this. Disparities, but similarities too; the main similarity being that the mind is still about 22.

Anyway, my idea is to post some of the pictures here as a sort of pictorial biography. It’s far from exhaustive, My youth was before digital photography and only memory has recorded the best and the worst of times.

Nonetheless, here we go: I was born in the sleeping city of Nelson towards the end of 1939...
